The people he describes in his life as fake people are to most people what would be considered normal. He's simply looking beyond the boundaries of sight and defining peoples inner hearts.
I think he is comming from a side that most people he has met is a total phony so he believes that everyone else is a phony. He doesn't know what to think about anyone.
In my view, holden uses the term wrong, which could be cause by his misinterpretation of when he first heard and used the word or it could be how society uses it in his time, maybe they used as the same way when you call someone weird in todays world. so he adopted it that way as to fit into society, but each side has significant evidence to prove itself. who can tell?
