How do you feel about Holden's conversation with Mrs. Morrow? Why does he lie as much as he does?

  1. I think that Holden really enjoyed his coversation because he got to pretend that he was somebody that he really is not. He lied so much so that this woman would think he was extremely interesting and give them something to talk about a majority of the train ride. Holden loves this conversatio because he can lie as much as he wants to without the fear of getting caught.

  2. I think the conversation shows that Holden is very lonely. I think making a lie up about having a tumor definatly shows this. You see him trying to get sympathy from a complete stranger. While lying to this woman about his so called tumor he enjoys it. You can see that he gets a kick out of it. Ths actually shows that his lonliness is going away from lying. This is definatly a bad thing because it might cause him to lie more. Since he's feeling good about lying and seeing that it's making him feel better he will di it more.

  3. I think that he doesn't want his parents to know that he is not in school and that mrs. Morrow is a friend of his mother's so he lied to make sure she didn't tell his mom and dad. His parents don't really care for him so they send him to a lot of schools just to keep him out of the house.

  4. I think Holden is unhappy with his lack of accomplishments and is dissapointed in himself, so when he talks to other people that dont know his true nature, he can lie and completely create an image for himself more in his liking. By lieing to people he can kind of adopt a role that he otherwise could only wish to have.

  8. I thought that Holden's conversation was pretty funny, despite the fact it shows his loneliness. If I were Holden, I'd probably lie just as much. He's probably never going to see this lady again, and he really doesn't have anyone to be tightly knit with, so why not pretend to be someone else and mess with people?

  9. Lying comes easy to him. He has an easier time lying to someone than talking about himself. He has problems letting people in.

  11. Holden finds lying fun. He seems to lie like its his job and loves to kid around with people a lot. I think he lies as much as he does because he doesnt want anyone knowing he flunked out of pency prep.

  12. i think it is weird because i would not talk to a parent of some body else i hardly know, but i think he lies because his whole life is basically a lie his parents just sent him away to different places and he doesnt really talk to anyone

  13. I think Holdens conversation with Mrs. Marrow is very awkward. He boards the train on a winter night when its dead silent and starts having a casual conversation with someones mother. He finds himself lying so much because he's nervous and bloodied up from the the fight he had with Stradlater. He also takes into consideration the fact he's going to a very prestigious school and is flunking.

  14. Holden lies as much as he does because he is afraid of the reaction he will get from others, if he tells people the truth.

  15. I feel like the conversation he had with mrs marrow shows that he lies very often because he is lonely which is why he made up his fake name and kept it up for a long time.
